A police officer since 1991, Nick DiCicco is
currently the K-9 handler for the Orange Village Police Department.
His love for dogs coupled with his realization that today's world
faces serious threats from drugs and violence, inspired Nick to
found Command K-9, Inc., offering canine narcotic and explosive
detection services to businesses, organizations, and homeowners
alike. We met with Nick recently, and listened as he outlined the
services offered by Command K-9, Inc., its hardworking dogs, and
their dedicated handlers;
Command K-9, Inc. is dedicated to providing
economically affordable private drug and explosive inspections to
public and private agencies through the use of highly trained
detector canines. We provide our services to schools, businesses,
religious institutions, residential properties, and sporting
events, in addition to many other special situations. We offer
incident response courses, and consulting services to customize
plans for protecting your facilities. We believe that taking the
extra steps to ensure your loved ones, co-workers, and customers
enjoy a safe, secure area that is free from drug use and violence
is everybody's responsibility. At Command K-9, Inc., we strive to
provide you with another tool in the struggle to maintain a drug
and violence free environment.
Command K-9, Inc. employs the services of three
explosive detector dogs and one narcotics detector dog. These
Belgian Malinois are European bred and trained, and are prized for
their beauty and working ability, and are known for their high
energy and agility. Our dogs are passive alerters, which means that
when they detect the odor of an explosive or a narcotic substance,
they immediately sit, pointing their nose at the source of the
odor. Each dog is trained and certified to meet and exceed the
detector dog standards set by the North American Police Work Dog
Association (NAPWDA) and the Ohio Police Officer Training Counsel
(OPOTC).
We only employ current or retired members of the
police force or those with military experience in the field of
explosives. All of our handlers undergo a six-week training course
where they learn the skills necessary to form a bond and develop a
partnership with their dog. During weekly training sessions, each
team undergoes situation training in one of our many training
areas, including corporate offices, schools, factories, parking
lots, apartment buildings, and residential areas. Explosive
detector dogs are trained to recognize trace amounts of numerous
explosive compounds from the most common, easily assessable
compounds to those that are difficult to obtain. Our narcotic
detector dogs are trained to recognize marijuana, hashish, cocaine
(both power and crack), heroin, and methamphetamines (speed).
The majority of our work is performed in
Northern Ohio, however we are available throughout a much larger
geographical area. We have two teams on call 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week to respond to any type of explosive or narcotic incident.
We're available to perform any type of sweep, whether it's checking
the employee locker rooms or executive offices for an employer, or
performing a sweep for a parent who suspects their child may be
using controlled substances. These searches may be conducted as a
one-time event, or we can arrange for scheduled weekly or monthly
sweeps.
Command K-9, Inc. is under retainer for the
Jewish Federation of Cleveland and regularly provide sweeps of over
forty synagogues and temples in the local area. We provide three
bomb dogs before and during each home game at the Cleveland Browns
Stadium and search the locker rooms, lounges, referees room, and
playing field. At one Browns game, a dog indicated a possible
explosive in a vehicle in the parking lot. We notified the bomb
squad, and discovered the vehicle contained an amount of nitrate, a
chemical used as a fertilizer and also in making bombs. Much to
everyone's relief, the vehicle was discovered to belong to a
referee who was simply an avid gardener.
Command K-9, Inc. dogs are similar to those used
by law enforcement, except we work for you and are bound by
contract to privacy. When you contact Command K-9, Inc. all of your
information will be kept confidential, including your name,
telephone number, and the nature of your call.
